For a new lawn, plan on 4 to 6 inches of topsoil depth. One cubic yard of topsoil covers approximately 80-90 square feet at 3-4 inches deep, or 50-55 square feet at 5-6 inches deep. For a typical Edmonton lawn of 1,000 square feet at 4 inches deep,  you’ll need about 12 – 13 cubic yards of top soil.

Spring (late April through June) and early fall (August to early October) are the best times to add topsoil in Edmonton. Spring gives new grass and plants a full growing season to establish.
