What is limestone rock used for in landscaping?
Limestone rock is a light grey to buff-coloured decorative stone used in Edmonton landscapes for garden beds, drainage areas, pathways, dry creek beds, and around trees and shrubs. Radiant Landscape Supplies stocks limestone rock in multiple sizes, from small sized aggregate up to boulder grade, suitable for both decorative and functional drainage applications.
What sizes of limestone rock do you carry?
We carry limestone rock in a range of sizes to match the application. Small sizes (10 to 25 mm) work for pathways and around plantings. Medium sizes (25 to 40 mm) are typical for garden bed cover and drainage. Larger sizes (75 to 150 mm and up) are used for accent rocks, retaining features, and erosion control. Boulder-grade limestone is available for feature placement.
What is the difference between limestone rock and limestone crush?
Limestone rock refers to whole or larger broken pieces used decoratively, while limestone crush is finely crushed limestone used as a compactable levelling layer under paving stones or as a driveway base. They serve completely different purposes. Use limestone rock for garden beds and visual features; use limestone crush under hardscape as a base or levelling layer.
How much limestone rock do I need to cover a garden bed?
One cubic yard of limestone rock covers approximately 80-90 square feet at 2-3 inches deep, or 80 square feet at 3-4 inches deep. For a typical Edmonton garden bed 10 feet by 15 feet at 3 inches depth, you’ll need about 1.5 yards. If the size of the limestone is larger than then needed quantity will be more. The Rock beds are usually applied 3 to 4 inches deep to fully suppress weeds and prevent soil showing through.
Do I need landscape fabric under limestone rock?
Yes, landscape fabric is strongly recommended under limestone rock in Edmonton yards. It suppresses weeds, prevents rock from sinking into soil, and keeps the bed looking clean over time. Without fabric, rock beds mix with soil within 2 to 3 seasons and become difficult to weed or refresh. Install fabric before spreading rock and overlap seams by 6 inches.
Does limestone rock change colour over time?
Yes, limestone rock develops a slightly weathered look after 1 to 2 seasons of exposure to Alberta sun, freeze-thaw cycles, and rain. The colour deepens from bright light grey to a softer muted grey-buff. This is normal, expected, and considered desirable in most landscape applications. Occasional rinsing with a garden hose restores brightness if preferred.
